We know what you’re feeling as you wade through the information on how to help your child. We understand the strong emotions many parents feel when they reach this point – desperation, anger, hopelessness, guilt and failure. Like most parents, you just want your happy child back, and we’re here to help.

Many parents wonder “where did I go wrong?” This is because we as parents feel responsible for our children’s well-being and behavior. Except in the most extreme cases, parents can’t be held directly responsible for the behavior of their children. Genetics and other biological factors, temperament, friends, attitudes about school, early experiences and personal beliefs affect children’s behavior. And as much as a parent might want to choose a child’s friends, the truth is that it is done by the child. Ultimately, children will make their own choices.

At Eckerd Academy, we encourage our students to take responsibility for their actions. We also work with the parents so they can be a part of their child’s transformation. While your first thoughts might be to send your child to a kids’ boot camp or military school to get them “straightened out,” such programs often do not address the specific and individual emotional, social and academic needs of each child like our programs do. We’re here to help give your child a much-deserved second chance.
